[TheForge] NJMT (was: rivets: chapter two)

Ther was a report on the web some time ago from the inspector who
checked
the traction engine after the explosion. I don't know if it is still online
or not.

The engine had been driven about a mile to the fairgrounds. The operator
had
driven it over new asphalt roadway which did not do the paving any favors.
The
local constbulary stopped him to discuss the damages. This probably took a
while and I would guess emotions were high on both sides.

The water was probably low after the drive plus the discussion period.
Here is
where opinions begin since those who know are no longer talking. When the
engine was moved forward water moved over the probably exposed crown sheet
causing flash steam. The pressure guage was off but that was a known factor.
The
crown sheet had eroded away to less than 1/2 it's normal thickness and I
believe
there were some other maintainence issues unresolved.

Bottom line, a number of issues all came together at an inopertune time.
Any
one of these would not have been a catastrophy by itself but each needed
attention. An unfortunate but fully preventable disaster.
