First, you need to be able to read "tiff" files. You can download a free
tiff reader from Alternatiff:
http://www.alternatiff.com/
This is a plug-in for your browser. It requires registration, but there
is no charge for use.
You can get this info from USPTO via the Help button.
Next, go to this web page (search by number):
http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/srchnum.htm
Type in the patent number (707246) and push Search. You will get a
mostly blank page saying full text is not available (due to the age of
the patent). You can see the pages as graphic images, however, and this
is why you need a tiff reader. Push the images button toward the top of
the page. After a fair bit of data transfer goes by, you'll see page 1.
It took me maybe 30 seconds using a 56k modem. Use the print button of
the tiff window, not the main browser print button. Now push the -> key
(not the ->| key) and it will load the next page. I sometimes have a
problem loading a page that going back and then forward again fixes.
You'll need to pick one of the other search pages if you don't know the
patent number. I have had poor luck finding patents on the USPTO via the
various text or author searches. I usually use some other patent service
(such as Frosty's European one) to come up with a patent number, and
then I download the patent from USPTO (assuming it is a US patent, of
course).
