Good morning, Wings Over Houston Communicators:
If you are receiving this email, you are on the roster for this year's airshow. If you have received this and cannot participate or have received it in error, please let me know as soon as possible.
This is the informational email that you will need to prepare yourself for this year's show. Please read it carefully and fully. This year we have a bit of a change affecting those of you who will be assigned to medical stations and personnel. That includes Medical Director, Medical Tents (North and South), and all Roving Medical Teams either on carts, bicycles or on foot.
We will go over these changes in the morning briefing, but I will give you a bit of the story here:
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has required that the Wings Over Houston Airshow comply with (NIMS) National Incident Management System guidelines and protocols regarding Medical Comms (among other things). Therefore, all medical comms will be managed from within the Port of Houston Command Post, where the Houston Fire Department Incident Commander for the event will be stationed for the airshow duration. One of our Amateur Radio Communicators (Kori Rahman, WX5KR) will be the Net Control for the incoming and outgoing medical traffic.
That said, those of you assigned to Medical Teams, Tents and personnel will be assigned Airshow Radios! Medical Comms will take place on Ch.12 of those handsets. You will NOT be using your personal HT's this year, and you will not be operating on our Logistics Net. You will be a dedicated Medical Communicator. I have been told that we will be getting speaker mics for those radios which will have an input for an earpiece or headset.
Here is the blurb from the Saturday and Sunday Instructions (attached):
**Some of you will be assigned (or can volunteer) as Communicators to one of 15-18 Roving Medical Teams (lots of action in these positions). All Medical Communicators will be assigned Airshow Radio and operate on that repeater (I believe the Med. Net operates on Channel 12). We will implore you to NOT try and listen to your HT while on duty with medical personnel (leave it in your bag please). Please know, that I am doing my very best to get speaker Mics with headphone jacks for the radios we will be using.
We will be controlling that Net with one of our Ham Operators from inside the Port of Houston Mobile Command Post located at near our Command Post. We will go over the details, and the reason (necessity) for this change in the morning briefing, but all medical comms and dispatches will be controlled from within that vehicle. Like last year, Med Team Communicators will adopt the number of the Med Team they are assigned to as their tactical call.
Medical calls that originate from the Logistics Net Communicators will be routed over to Kori from Theresa so that Kori can log it and dispatch it. The transfer will be done either on the Airshow Radio that Theresa will have, or by dedicated VIOP phones that will be supplied by Lee Glassman, WA5LEE and placed in both Command Post Vehicles.
Okay, now that that is out of the way...We are currently staffed at 65 Communicators for the weekend but there is always room for more. Pass the word to you circle of influence and Nets please. As we get closer to airshow, I would love to hear from you conforming the days you will be working. This tends to change as we move closer to airshow weekend. Our Logistics Net will operate as it always has with Theresa Williams, KE5MUX at the Net Control Position. We will be using Fort Bend County's brand-new Command Van as our Operating Position. Thank you to Fort Bend County as always for the use of this beautiful and very capable equipment. We would also like to thank Fort Bend County Judge, KP George and Emergency Management Coordinator, Greg Babst for their support of the Wings Over Houston Airshow.
Thanks to you all for volunteering your time and energy to this 41st annual Wings Over Houston Airshow. Greater Houston Area Hams have been supporting this event since its inception. The service we provide is invaluable and greatly appreciated by all involved, and in attendance. Expect crowds of 50 to 60 thousand each day and pray for cool and clear weather.
For Ronald Fawcett, KD5CDM
See you in October!
