Prototype models could have been anything. Imagination can run wild until
you put down on paper the cost and perceived bang for the buck. Just as
the 4X-250 mod, which evidently did float around the country in one form
or another, hams were doing all sorts of mods on older ham gear in the
60's, 70's and 80's. Sweep tubes were cheap in the 70's. To many, it was
just an old boatanchor; one step from the back of the closet or the
trash.
