[Yaesu] FT-847 question

The knob on mine is nice and smooth and doesn't appear the least bit wobbly.
However, it's from later in the production run. I have seen many with the
wobbly knob problem, it's due to errors in making the knob itself, nothing
wrong with the actual radio hardware. Some of them seem to have the shaft
hole slightly off center. I fixed one by filling the shaft hole with epoxy
and drilling a newly centered hole, it took a lot of time and patience, it
worked perfectly in the end but honestly wasn't worth all the trouble in my
opinion but it meant everything to the owner of the radio.
The power switch is a common problem with the 847, and I would almost bet
that if you send it back for another one with a good power switch eventually
it will fail anyway. Your better off just opening up the radio and fixing
the power switch in that one and keeping it if everything else is ok. It's
a quick and easy fix and there is plenty of info on the net about how to
swap the contacts around in the switch, etc. Another thing to do is once
it's fixed turn the radio on and off by flipping off the power supply
running it instead of using the power button, that is if you don't the power
supply on to run other items. But, even if that's the case a relay or
switch inline with the power cord is another quick fix. I have been
shutting off the power supply instead of the radio power switch on mine
since I got it years ago, no problems, and the power switch hasn't failed
yet. So I assume the problem lies in regular use of the switch, it just
wears out.
