    I have to agree with your mic selection except that there is a much
better choice if you want excellent communications audio.  Try the Shure
444D dynamic microphone. I use it on my Yaesu FT-1000D with excellent
crisp audio.  That mic has a peak at around 2100 or 2200 hz which is
what you want to go communications audio. I have found that the factory
Yaesu desk mic has too much of a bassiness response and is NOT very
articulate. Most users of the Yaesu desk mic will think that it is ok
till they try the Shure 444D which is a dual impedance (selectable with
switch under the base). I have never had any good results using either
the Heil HC-4 or HC-5 cartridges with my FT-1000D.
