I don't think he is trying for good audio quality from V26 especially on low
bands where you need punch in the audio. I remember years ago we had to
wrap the barrel of the MD-1 mics because the audio was too bland and had far
to much bass. The 444 is a better match for communications quality audio
but I don't buy the Heil mics sound bad. I have 4 heil boom mic sets with
the HC4 element and they all cut thru better. The HC5 element is great for
rag chews outside of contests.
Now with the FT 920 I turn off the equalizer with the Heil mics as even in
high cut it has a tinty sound. I cut the EQ off and go to another menu item
and add -225 to add bass.
I think with the problem spoken about here was RF on the mic. Yaesu gear
has always had problems with RF. On an old FT 980, I had to add split beads
at the mic connector. The MD-1 with the up down buttons were the main entry
for RF feedback.
