I have tuning upgraders installed on both the main and auxillary
receiver VFOs and wouldn't be without them.

Some of the quirks reported by PA1HR appear to be unrelated to the
upgrader installation. For instance, the -2.21 he refers to upon
power-up and pressing the PACKET button is the mid frequency between
the packet tones selected by the DIP switches on the top of the
radio. This is not well documented in the manual so I can see where
this might be confusing. As for the refusal to go into RTTY mode, I
cannot duplicate this on my rig.

My installation does have some quirks. As stated earlier, the tuning
sometimes takes a step in the wrong direction upon first turning the
knob. The cause of this has been stated in earlier posts. Also, on
power-up, my main tuning sometimes tunes in 100 Hz steps. I simply
tweak the sub VFO and it reverts to 10 HZ steps. I don't know what
causes this behavior but it only occurs on startup so it's not much
of a problem. My opinion is that this is the price we pay for a simple
plug-in modification. To avoid this problem would probably require major
surgery or redesign of the synthesizer to fully integrate the upgrader
into the Yaesu tuning scheme.

In summary, I like the tuning upgrader very much. The slower tuning
rate makes operating much more pleasurable. In practice, the 10 HZ
step in the wrong direction is unnoticeable and would never be detected
unless you were watching the frequency display closely.
