Although I disagree with the accessory's manufacturer's acknowledgement of
the problem as "no discernable inconvenience"...

I do realize that occasional reversal, especially at startup, is a common
optical encoder problem. Many radios I have do this- some really badly. So,
it may not be their fault at all, or their circutry is somehow bringing the
problem to greater prominence.
