[Yaesu] 847 vs 897

Hi Renee,

I have an 847 and it's a decent right but the front end is not that great.
Sensitivity is not a major spec in radios these days. Every radio out ther=
e
from the low end starter radio to the ultra-high priced top end models have
the same sensitivity.

What separates one radio from another is its ability to keep the front end
from overloading and thus generating intermod inside the radio.

The 847s front end isn't all that stellar. Perhaps if you purchase the
optional filter for it, it would be better, but it's not like an FT-1000D
type at all. It's adequate for general use if you want to do some
contesting and ragchewing. I like the radio a lot, particularly for VHF/UH=
F
and satellite work.

The 897 has likely the same or very similar receiver characteristics. I
don't own one but generally most radios in that price range are all pretty
similar. It's advantage is that it can be battery powered and is
transportable.

I would say to get the 897 unless you are interested in doing satellite wor=
k
and then I would suggest the 847.
