[Yaesu] 847 vs 897

Hi Renee,

You also might want to consider the FT100D. It is an
excellent radio at todays price, and is smaller than
the other two, which makes it nice to travel with. I
would not recommend a FT847. I had one of these for a
few days, and got rid of it because the receiver
quality is very poor. The selectivity is very wide,
and the receiver overloads pretty easy. If you read
the QST review, they do mention this, and it is not
like them to criticize a major advertiser. I replaced
it with a FT100D, and the difference between the two
is night and day. Yes it is more menu driven, but if
the receiver falls apart initially, all the front
panel knobs in the world won't make a difference.

I have not operated a FT897 yet, but have been hearing
good things about them. They seem to have a decent
receiver, and the ability to run an internal PS, and
the bolt on autotuner is a definite plus for portable
operations.

Good luck in you decision.
