These were standard components in the 50's, and I think the main reason
they were used was that they reduced the amount of labor required to
install "standard" circuits into a chassis.
They are probably good, but DO go bad. You can check the individual
components with an ohmmeter and/or capacitor meter. The capacitors are
"ceramic" and so are pretty reliable, but the resistors can be damaged
by overload.
The 6S6 bulb is still available, often the local ACE or True Value
hardware store will have them as they were used in some appliances. The
description is a 6V, 6W bulb, so if it will fit mechanically, a
"night-light" bulb will replace in a pinch.
