Danny,

I own 3 HF Rigs, a Kenwood 520, a Kenwood 570SG and an Icom 706 MIIG. I
don't recommend the 520 for obvious reasons it works fine just doesn't have
the bells. I am very happy with the 570. I use it on both SSB and PSK and it
works fine, Myles used it a lot on 6 Meters SSB as well. It is a little big
for mobile use and can't have a remote head.

I use the 706 in the truck and while I like the remote head concept, I
can't recommend it. It is not too convenient to operate, as they have tried
to do everything with as few buttons as possible on the front panel. I
understand why they do, I just don't care for it. While on HF it seems to
work fine, on VHF and UHF it leaves a lot to be desired. The sensitivity is
not as good as my old Kenwood, the SQ control goes from wide open to 100uV
in 1/3 of the width of a human hair, and the scan function is on the verge
of being worthless. It does not support Alpha based memory naming well and
is not memory programmable via a laptop, which is feature I really miss from
my Kenwood.

I also have the HF Auto tuner and it works OK but will sometimes forget to
tune and will have to be manually reminded. The manual for the Rig itself is
OK, not great, the manual for tuner part is the equivalent of a roll of
toilet paper.

ICOM lovers please save me the flaming, they make a lot of great rigs, it is
just this one the user interface was an after thought. When they get the
price down a little farther I will try the Kenwood 2000 with the remote
head, I am picky so I may not like it any better.

Mike

I would like to know what HF rig is your favorite and why. I am considering
on buying something else and would appreciate any comments.
