Danny,
Quite naturally most hams will say that the rig they own is the best...
human nature at work. My experience with H.F. rigs is rather limited as I
have only owned, myself, 4 different H.F. rigs; an FT200 (Henry Tempo One),
a TS820S and the present TS940SAT at the home station and the TS430S in the
mobile. Also, I have had a number of hours on the TS520S although I never
owned one. What I can say I do like very much the features of the 940 and
its performance vs the price you have to pay for it today. The receiver is
quiet and sensitive, there are a number of filters still available on the
market and the pass band tuning (separate low and high end controls) and
notch are superb. The transmitter always elicits good audio reports and the
specs on IMD are quite good since they used higher voltage transistors
rather than the 12V transistors used in the pure 12v radios. All modes are
supported including FSK 160-10 and there are 4 banks of 10 memories that
store all setup data including mode and both vfo freqs if spit mode was
stored. I'd buy another 940 if I needed another radio but I would make sure
it had the built in autotuner like I have now. There are a few 940's out
there without the tuner and bare tuners are hard to find if you needed to
add one to a radio.
