Thanks for all the input. Has anyone had any experience with the Icom 746
or a FT920? My first thought was to try a TS 940 or a 930 is the right one
came up for sale. I guess what I really would like to be able to do is play
with several different rigs during contest conditions to see how they do,
but that would be a little tough, so I am asking for your inputs.
I really think the 940 is probably the best rig for the money although I
have seen some FT-920's at a fair price recently and the 746 is at a reduced
close-out price right now. I do have some problems with some of Icoms
quirks but I do not know if those things I have seen in the past are still
present on the 746.
Mike (N9GXW), I do have a 706 and it is the reason I want a decent HF rig
for crowded band conditions. It is OK for a one package does all mobile,
but barely, and it really suffers when there are several strong signals
present, even with the attenuator turned on. It will continue to serve as
my mobile rig and it may have to live as my 6 meter radio unless I get an HF
radio that has 6 meters.
