I've had my Icom 7300 for almost 4 years and LOVE it! Best advice is to
watch as many YouTube videos on the 7300 for set-up and for digital modes.
Tons of videos out there. K0PIR has a bunch just on the 7300 on YouTube.
The best thing I did after getting the 7300 was to purchase a Heil Pro7
Headset! I have a significant hearing loss in both of my old ears and I
can say that the headset is awesome. The phase shift for the audio is
unbelievable until your actually hear it, In a fast paced contest or a
pile up the phase shift makes all the difference in the world on actually
hearing the audio in front of your forehead instead of in each ear! The
microphone element for the Icom has people asking me how much power I am
running... and I am only running 100 watts into a G5RV at 33 feet! With
the Heil Pro7, I run the 7300 with MIC GAIN at 5 and the Compression at
5... and on the 7300 I tighten the transmit bandwidth filter to the MEDIUM
setting for that extra punch on voice articulation that Bob Heil always
talks about. In CW Mode the 7300 absolutely cranks! I've used it on FT8
and FT4 with no problem and run about 35 watts and had WAS and DXCC in FT8
in a couple months and only need 1 state (DE) on FT4 and about 15 more for
DXCC on that mode. All in all... he did great choosing the 7300!
