Hi Mark,
I'd say about a million candlepower! Thanks so much for your detailed
reply, which was exactly what I was hoping for. I guess my estimate of
the amplifier power was fairly close ;-) Thanks also for the speaker
info, which makes sense given the design intent. Right now I've got it
playing through a pair of Heathkit AS-193 speakers, which are a bit
unique in that they're about the size and shape of a big city phone book
and hang on the wall. But they sound good and the KLH drives them to
what we used to hear described as "room-filling volume".
Initially I thought one channel was dead and was dreading the need to
potentially find new output transistors, but it turned out that my
speaker wiring was the culprit instead, so I fortunately dodged that
bullet. I recall back in the 70s a company called Germanium Power
Devices was consolidating the production of almost all the germanium
product from RCA and others who wanted to shut their lines down, but I
see now they' only make specialized opto detectors so I doubt there are
any suppliers of new germanium transistors left on the planet. So I
guess we better take good care of the ones we've got!
I am surprised (in a good way) to have a reply from a true authority
like yourself, and certainly appreciate it. Having worked for an
electronics company both before and after a major corporate "culture
change" I can relate to your "good years" comment as well. The
original KLH left a great legacy.
Thanks and 73,
Bob W9RAN
