Duane,
signal to noise ratio is the main benefit.
Everything else the same, the two track system
should be better by about 3 dB in the noise
ratio.
A secondary benefit is much better cross
talk figures. In a four track stereo system,
the main problem is cross talk from the
opposite direction tracks. In a two track
system, the cross talk would be far less
objectionable, resulting essentially in a
loss of separation, rather than cross talk
from an unrelated audio source.
Track width could affect frequency response
somewhat, but not significantly, me thinks.
