The are also (like all fluorescents with ballasts) somewhat of a fire hazard
- again more so as they age! Funny how they talk about the enviro-impact of
the mercury and not the RF interference or the fire hazard when they push
these things.
Personally, I'm waiting for low voltage LEDs.

Only some are noisy - at least when new - over time the others may get noisy
as the components age from heat and stress.
CFL's are like fader controls for lights, some are noisy and some are not.
I have several in the house and outside and so far none are noisy ...
so far ...
