Geesh, let's get something straight:

I use that to discharge any static residue NOT as a defence against 
direct hit.

By the way, NOTHING survives a direct hit.

Now I made me self clear ......

I too, disconnect antennas when not in use as I think we all do.

(BTW; if lightning hits ground rod, it will to ground as intended; there 
won't be much of a rod left .... )
