I admit that I'm no expert and my knowledge about lightning protection is
somewhat limited ... but the way I see it there are three relative levels of
badness:

1. Static slowly builds up, and needs to be bled away.

2. Lightning striking nearby induces severe but not extreme voltages on your
lines.

3. Direct hits vaporize everything that doesn't burn.
