Tnx for the info, Tony.  I recently did the analysis based on the QST
article.  I have a multiband vertical located about 8 feet from where I
sit.  I run a KPA500 amp to the antenna through 10 feet of RG-213 so most
of the power gets to the antenna. I am not sure how to figure the gain of
such a vertical other than assuming it is less than a normal single-band
quarter wave.  Nevertheless, the near field dominates in this case.  The
results came out with less than 6 feet for the MPE requirements.

Having done the analysis, what next?  Does it have to be submitted to the
FCC for verification?  If one exceeds the MPE, does this mean building a
screenroom around the shack or operate QRP only?
