I used a rivet forge for almost a decade before I built a bigger one
with a proper cast iron firepot. I put a refractory brick on edge on
either side of the tuyere and filled behind them with sand. Without
the bricks, the fire spread and became larger than needed. Didn't
know about castable refractory then.
I still have the rivet forge and use it as a portable. If I were to
start using it regularly, I would go with a refractory lining. But
the part that failed on mine was the tuyere. I had to twice replace
the grate over the air inlet after it burned out. A castable lining
probably wouldn't prevent that and I'd have to be sure that the
refractory lining didn't prevent removing the grate and the bolts that
hold both the grate (on top) and the air pipe (underneath) to the
bowl.
