Thanks Mike. I never coated the forge with a refractory material but maybe
I should have. Since the pan has not burned/rusted through yet I might want
to try adding a layer of a castable or rammable refractory before
reinforcing the steel bottom. Do you know how thick the coating should be
on this type of forge? And, do you know what type of material might hold up
best to wear and flux?

those small rivet forges need to be sealed/coated with fire clay every so
often. you can buy it at a refractory outlet for cheap money.

Using a large disk of steel would work great.. lea 've it loose in the
forge bed with nothing in it but the firepot. This will allow for the
items to expand and contract at different rates..
