those small rivet forges need to be sealed/coated with fire clay every so often.  you can buy it at a refractory outlet for cheap money.

Using a large disk of steel would work great.. lea 've it loose in the
forge bed with nothing in it but the firepot.   This will allow for the
items to expand and contract at different rates..
