[TheForge] Forging a pipe flange...

Bruce - using your measurements, 20.5 squared = 420.25 420.25 x Pi = 1320.3 divided by 4 = 330 sq inch 330 x 55 = 18153 cubic inch. I have always used .3 pounds per cubic inch for rough estimates so equals 5446 pounds give or take.

Using Mikes estimate 24 squared = 576 x Pi = 1810 divided by 4 = 452.5 x 72 = 32580 cu inch. Rough weight = 32580 x .3 = 9774 pounds. Now Mike lives in Canada with the metric ton of 2200 pounds (2204.6) so 9774/2200 = 4.44 or his 4 and a half tons.

Biggest open die press I have seen was 10,000 tons. (US tons) and the biggest closed die press I have seen was 75,000 tons in Russia. But we could forge bigger Aluminum parts on our 50,000 ton press at Cleveland than the Russian's could on their 75,000 ton press. This is because of our process knowledge and computer modeling of the effects of the rate of deformation on the metal. Both the 30,000 ton press and the 50,000 press at Cleveland were paid for originally by the Air Force and then ALCOA bought them over time.

Didn't you forget pi?

My rough estimate: Tup is ca. 6' high, ca. 2' in diameter, so about
4.5 tons.

Same. Latinate plurals all the way. A friend of mine was once gently chided for referring to "musea" in a public talk. Hah! Good on him.

Now how about less common singulars? Interstix, faex. (And that 'ae'
should be an ae ligature if this weren't ASCII, right?. :-)

ObSmithing:

Went to visit Tim Bolivar yesterday. His project of renovating his late dad's woodshed to be his new blacksmith shop is coming along nicely -- forge, anvil, work benches in place. The Palmer Power Spring Hammer [1] that I swapped off to him for the 300# A&O is sitting at the foot of the lane, expected to get huffed up the (very
steep) hill and moved into the new shop next week.

Oh, and I got a lovely new pocket knife for Christmas. Maker, Greg Keith, pattern welded blade. I like it a lot!
