Good evening, Chuck (and the others who replied)

     I finally got it into my shed.  I cleaned of the rust a bit, but it 
needs more work.  There are 7-8 photos.  They are on my web site here:

     I tried to describe everything I could see.  I will try the ball 
bearing test as well as the other suggestions.  It will do for what I 
want, I think (hope springs eternal!)  However, it isn't a pristine 
antique anvil and I'm glad I didn't pay the full price. Will be 
interested in what you experts think.
