I use Linux mint, it is based on Ubuntu Linux. A year ago Ubuntu changed
the desktop to a new style which I did not like. The Mint version looks
much like the old Ubuntu which is reminiscent of windows. If you use
Thunderbird for your email and Firefox for your web browsing the
transition will be pretty seamless.

I use mint on a dual boot system similar to yours. You can download the
dvd image and boot from that to try it out and never have to install it
to try it.
see:
http://linuxmint.com/
and:
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

The dual boot is not a problem unless you don't install windows first.
If you have a functional windows system I would most likely try the dual
boot unless you just want to s can everything and start fresh.
Mint will see the settings for the windows Thunderbird or Outlook
installations and allow the new system to import your email and such
from the windows partition.

If you are new to this stuff download and read the users manual and try
the live cd/dvd first.

It is far better to ask questions first than to proceed without being
sure of the process.

What is the problem with your windows system. While I do like Linux for
a bunch of esoteric reasons, I have 4 computers using Win 7 and 3 more
with XP... they all perform very well. Do you have Windows Security
Essentials, Spybot and Malwarebytes installed and used weekly? If you
use windows you should use all three.
