Yeah Rowland, I would suggest trying a bootable CD, DVD, or even thumb
drive—burning a CD or DVD is easier for most people, but the instructions
to setup a thumb drive to be your bootable-linux are not too hard and that
works much better. Any of these ways, you can try out a particular
distribution and see how well you like it, if it uses all your hardware and
peripherals as we'd hope, etc :) Even if it is not your primary, it is
VERY handy to have around for recovery purposes... and even if you end up
installing it on your hard drive, either alone or in dual-boot to keep your
windows too, the recovery potential is awesome—even on Apple computers too.
However, I'm saying it this way b/c I've sat down at your (prior?) computer
with you. In general, it is as easy to use and has way more potential, but
some parts are much trickier to learn. I think it's a good fit for you.
For others, and also if you happen to rely on any particular apps beyond
the modern suite of web browsing, office docs, and some multimedia, then it
may vary... and on most modern machines, virtualization such as VMware can
handle most legacy concerns or platform-special-needs :)
