Kinda what I figured.
OTOH, the SCA may be missing a chance here: Create a parallel set of
titles that one can ONLY get buy spending money. Maybe $20k for the
Baron-equivalent, $100k for Viscount-equivalent, $500k for
Earl-equivalent, 2.5M for Marquess-equivalent, and $12.5M for
Duke-equivalent. SCA immediately donates half of this to some worthy
charity (hospitals, feeding the hungry, etc.), earmarks another 10%
for "frills" for these nobility, and fills its coffers with the
rest...
