[TheForge] Mower vs boot scraper

Jay,

Thanks for the information. I had figured that the mower was dead as soon as
I saw that the crank was bent. It was kind of a Hail Marry to straighten it
and see if it would go. When it didn't I again wrote it off, then the
suggestion about the flywheel key came in. I figure it's worth the time to
check it out.

Now that we live in the coutry most of our mowing is done on the rider with
the push mower just used for trimming every other time. If it runs after
checking/replacing the flywheel key, I'll use it until it dies. It's already
25 years old so it doesn't owe me anything. I don't have the time or the
skill to do a complete rebuild and need to get back on track working in the
shop.

Easier to get a complete short block ... you spend more for the assembly,
but spend less labor installing and get a longer repair. Also a good time
to add anew carb (cheap). Check the Briggs site for their engine-exchange
section, put in your engine number, the part for the sblock for your engine
should display, You can get it and the parts you need from a local LG
engine source if in / near a moderate size or larger city

In my day job I support the Sears LG (Lawn & Garden) field techs doing this
kinda thing ... the comments about the damaged bearings / seals & flywheel
key are spot on. Once a crank is bent from impact, consider it a lost
cause.
