[TheForge] OT -- East Coast correspondents -- how goes H. Irene?

NJ got hit bad in some places, but not so much near me.   There are
dams breached, bridges out, etc.  Most major highways seem to have
opened soon after the storm.

I lost power AFTER the hurricane for 36 hr or so.  Fortunately, I'd
invested in a generator from HF last year, and put it to use in
pumping out the inch or so of water in the basement (that would never
have accumulated had the power not gone out).  Later I used this to
power the fridge.  There's still a trickle of water seeping into the
basement, but nothing to complain about.

I had no other damage at all -- nothing blown around the yard, no
shingles missing, etc.  The Motel 6 I was staying at in Harrisburg
lost shingles and a back fence (knocked over), and also lost cable TV,
more damage than I had at my house.  I saw surprisingly few trees down
between Harrisburg and the Jersey Shore, but there were trees down,
make no mistake.

I can link my cell phone to my computer, and this enabled me to use
the Internet & email while power was down.  (Had I a UPS for my cable
modem, this would not be an issue.)  The connection is slower than
cable, but workable.  Between phone, cell phone, and email, I never
lost contact with family, which is good.

Nonetheless, it was a pleasure to get power back on.  Reading by a
single oil lamp is doable, but not pleasurable.
