You can refine the over the shelf stuff by running the water out of it.  Also if ou have very clean and fine hardwood ash you can use that.

I've seen several blacksmiths forge weld without,  flux just makes it 
easier.  I don't recommend STARTING without flux as it is more difficult and 
requires practice and confidence.  20 Mule Team Laundry Borax, not hand 
washing, is available at many grocery stores. If available, clean 
Quartz/Silica sand works too.
