I've seen several blacksmiths forge weld without, flux just makes it easier. I don't recommend STARTING without flux as it is more difficult and requires practice and confidence. 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax, not hand washing, is available at many grocery stores. If available, clean Quartz/Silica sand works too. Good luck
