There was a shop in Anacortes a few years back that had a bunch of
Euro. anvils. Well used with that antique shop patina. The person at
the counter said, "You're paying for the experience, not the anvil."
That was for a maybe 175 to 200# Nimba shaped anvil. They wanted
$1300. I passed on that one.

Ries, I've seen people buy anvils for ridiculous prices, for
ridiculous purposes. 20 years ago, when reasonably good anvils (used,
but not beat to Hel) anvils were going for $1-1.50 / lb, I watched a
couple guys get into a bidding war over one. It was a decent anvil,
couple hundred lbs, and a guy who wanted it for his (automotive) shop
lost out to the Dr who wanted it for his home decor, at over $1000.
Also, I've noticed that you guys over on the left coast tend to pay
about twice as much as people over here- in fact, I'm looking for a
#400+ anvil at a reasonable price, for a knife-making friend of mine
because of that.
That $4500 anvil is in Massachusetts. Granted there are a few guys
around here that will squeeze ever penny out of everything they can,
but I can't imagine any of the serious smiths I know around here even
considering that kind of price.
OTOH, I've gone to a few auctions around here, and seen yuppie looking
types bidding silly amounts of money for anything they think might
possibly be an antique- including anvils.
