Probably the most common mistake I see is folk using hard facing rod.

If on the other hand you use build up rod like that used in rock crushers 
all you need do is make sure to control the HAZ and heat treat properly 
after it's all over. Build up rod is very much impact resistant but will not 
get brittle and sticks to darned near anything. It's intended to build up 
under hardfacing rod, there's a serious limit to how many passes you can lay 
with hardfacing rod. One. We used a bunch of both on drill bits, auger and 
such. boy I'm glad I'm not a driller anymore!
