Andy- one other possibility, besides just shooting the architect, is a  
mechanical joint, skipping welding, soldering, or brazing altogether.

Wagner makes these butt joint connectors for most standard pipe sizes-  
you drill two very small holes on the bottom, and use an allen wrench  
to tighten.

I have used em, and they work pretty well.
