Good discussion indeed and a ferocious problem.
Wonder if you could use an extra thick vessel and periodically let the 
inside heat up just enough to allow
the porosity and trapped gas to escape and the grain structure to 
rebuild? Very tricky at best.
Hard to imagine a design where the vessel is replaceable...along with 
the return of the disposal problem.
Think it's one of the limiting factors on the working life of our 
present nukes too.
Sounds like the right materials problem to invest a whole lot of money in.
