I have a credit card that I demanded be limited to the minimum credit, 
in this case $2000. This card is used for all internet purchases and 
some that are not known suppliers.

That way if my online purchase is compromised I have a limited risk.

I also make sure that my credit card number is changed about once a 
year. Just call up your issuer and tell them you want a new number. They 
never say no.
In restaurants the card never leaves the table. If they can't process it 
right there, I will walk to the cashier.
I have stopped going to any place that prints out more than the last 
four digits of the card number on the receipt.
