Maybe....My Champion forge has "Clay Forge Before using" cast in the bottom. 
So I do.  I've seen quite a few with cracked bottoms.  So far  mine haven't 
and the clay is easy to apply, free if you find it, cheep to buy.

Your experience may differ...
