The Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) proposal was overly optimistic
and the engineers along with the FCC painted a much rosier picture than
could be experienced in actual practice. The interference that it caused to
existing RF services was under estimated as was the interference to it by
those existing RF services such as amateur radio. Another hurdle was that
for the system to work reliably the power line system had to be really clean
and not generate any noise itself - bad insulators, splices and other
connecting points had to be in very good condition. Most power distribution
systems are not maintained to a level that afforded good data transmission.
The small test area in Bowling Green drove the power company nuts trying to
repair their equipment to the levels necessary. The FCC tried to cook the
specs in the favor of good BPL and lost in a court battle that challenged
their engineering data and it pretty much died after that. I suspect some
folks are still trying to re-engineer it.

We are in a similar situation..every time the road slides it tries to take
the phone line with it, closer to the ocean. There are dozens of extra
splices..add in the salt loading.. plus a pairgain system..and it's slooooow
dialup.
Wonder what ever happened to the broadband-over-the-powerline proposal?
