[TheForge] How large a generator? (Way OT)

As I am here in South Florida I am interested in auxiliary power. When a hurricane comes through we can be without power for quite some time. My neighbors have generators but I don't like the noise or the space they require.
I saw an ad for a battery back up for your house. That would be silent and you could have in inside the house if you want. With "Horrible Freight" selling inverters and solar panels so cheap it seems that would be the way to be able to power a TV and a couple of lights for a while. Golf cart batteries aren't too expensive.
So if I knew how many I needed just to power a minimum of appliances all I would have to do is build a box to put it in.
What would anyone think?
Thanks for any replies,
Lynn
