Ben,

Why not upload  a few photos of your vise on Photobucket or some other
photo site and then post the link for us to look at.

I found an "odd" looking "short" post vise a couple years ago, and someone
on this list diagnosed it as one that was designed to bolt to the big
wooden tongue of a horse drawn wooden wagon.

You can make a new post vise "spring" out of mild steel. If you don't feel
up to that, I believe there is a 'TheForge' list member makes post vise
springs to order, and sells them on eBAY.
