Howdy, I've got a question about an unfamiliar post vise which I just
picked up today at an estate sale.
It is medium-sized, prolly 80 or 90 pounds originally (what I have is
75#), with 5 1/2 inch jaws, but the post was broken more than once I'm
guessing. The main body, the upper 2 feet, is what I have, although
the outer upright has also been broken a few inches from the bottom.
The design variation that is unfamiliar is a hinged cross-member ("X")
where the usual spring is, and it looks like the bottom end had a
spring holding it together. The X fit into a slotted piece on the
main post and the front [partial] post. The threading appears to be
in great shape and the jaws line up real nice aside from normal wear,
so I am hopeful about mounting this on a stump or even restoring the
post. I'll go look for a name on it and could get some pictures
posted, but I could not find a similar design very easily via google.
So one break was on the main post, 2' from the top of the jaws, and
the other is in the front upright member, which is a sort of channel
on this vise.
Woohoo, I got the vise, some good old USA-made tools (pipe cutters, lg
monkey wrench, etc) and 13 pairs of usable tongs (5 are nice) plus
various interesting scraps, for $70! :))
thanks!
