[TheForge] Re: Portable stand for a post vise

How about "semi-portable" or "luggable with assistance"?

My main 6" vice is bolted to a bench but when I got the 8" I had long
lusted after, I didn't want to swap it in to the bench spot. So I
made a rig that resembles Andy's ASCII pic, but with these differences:

+ The 4x4 HSS post is solidly fastened to the vise with a band &
wedge arrangement similar to the traditional connection to the
     original bench mount.

+ The floor plate is a 4'x4' piece of 1/4" plate with a 1-1/2" hole
at the center of one edge.

+ Welded to the center of the plate there is a socket large enough
to accept the 4x4 post. Next to it is a smaller socket to
accept the leg of the vise.

Thus the vise/post unit isn't attached to the floor plate. When I want
to move it, I use an engine hoist on wheels to lift the vise & post
out of the sockets as a unit a stow it. Then I use the hole near the
edge of the plate to pick up the plate with the hoist and stand it on
edge out of the way.

Both the 8" vise and the plate are too heavy for me to wrassle around
by hand safely. For a smaller vise, the same design might not require
a hoist to move. A 3' diameter disk of 1/4" plate would probably be
fine since you'd stand on it when twisting or bending and that would
have half the weight of a 4'x4' piece of plate. And a 4" or 5" vise,
even with the HSS post attached, would probably be manageable unless
yer back is even worse than mine.

( Why, thank you, pf! )

FWIW,
- Mike
