I have done about 20 spikes and turned them into  knives. I don't  quench 
them until I am done forging them and they go red hot into a 5  gallon bucket of 
old engine oil. Non synthetic. I  have hit them with a  hammer and no damage. 
The only one I quenched in water I hit  it on the anvil and it shattered. All 
of mine are HC marked. Put 2 spikes  through a 25 pound hammer and got them 
about 1/4 inch  thick and about 14"  long. One is a dagger style and other is 
single edge. Not I just got to find the  right wood for the handles.
