Ike,  Did you temper the spike you water quenched?  I from the school of 
always temper, if you heat treat something.  With some tough alloy steels we 
get away with not tempering -- but almost all would be better if tempered.

Some folks don't temper S7 for example, just heat above critical, air quench 
and use.  It is a better tool if tempered.
