Depends on what you are using the treadle hammer for.
I have made 5 or 6 different models.
My latest I just smash al. cans and do chisel or reposee' work cold.
With this in mind I used pipe for the anvil and used thick wall tube for the
head with no lead so it only weighs 35# at the most.
I hit the cans twice which gives me enough time to grasp the next out of the
box and keep the motion going. I try to do at least 1000# of cans a year
which helps pay for more toys.
Saved up for a few years and bought a Say Mak from Tom Clark with the $ from
scrap. This way it doesn't bother me to use the hammer to process more
scrap.

I have a treadle hammer with a 300 lb anvil of 6" tubing having a 2.5" wall.
It works just fine. Solid stock might work better. I don't know.
