Portland cement breaks down at a fairly low temp..in forge terms.
Fireclay is better but melts when it gets wet...but it doesn't take much
cement to keep it together.
Some subsurface bailing wire reinforcing will help too.
The vermiculite is to make air spaces for weight and insulation.
Commercial refractories are the lasting solution..a local pottery supply
can help you too.
When you get right down to it, riverbank clay with sand ,is traditional.
Dirt works.
