Danr,

Rather than gas, use charcoal for the weldings. Not the briquets, the
lump charcoal. It's a bit more expensive, but if you're going to try
for period, you might as well use a period fuel ;-) Charcoal is nice
to weld with- none of the nasties that mineral coal has, and plenty of
heat. It will work fine in that forge you have. Shouldn't detract from
an adventure such as you're emabarking on using modern materials ;-)

Mean time, the garb I'm making is coming forward apace. We're dyeing
the dalmatica now- meantime, I'm cussing and stitching up my boots-
instructions were a bit wonky, and I managed to stitch in 3 ft of
seams that I had to take out and redo- you may have head me cussing
from over there ;-) Should be a sharp outfit, although it doesn't look
like the two-tone dyeing I'm attempting will work out quite the way I
intended. It's still in the dye vbath, so we we see after it's washed
and dried...

Heat it up
Hit it hard
Repent as necessary.

Priorities:

It's the smith who makes the tools, not the tools which make the smith.

notices I have read with pleasure. -Clarence Darrow
